Congrats to Art Maerlender

A big congrats to our client Art Maerlender on the publication of Blacklisted: A Memoir of Race and Rugby in Apartheid South Africa.

Blacklisted is a hybrid historical memoir of a mixed-race rugby tour to South Africa in 1981 that was blacklisted by the United Nations. That tour took place as apartheid was reaching its peak of repression and international furor over those policies. The story is told both in text and photographs, as it provides an “on the ground” view of apartheid as over thirty Americans’ attempted to dissent those policies by playing against mixed-race teams. From its inception this tour sought to make a statement against apartheid’s oppression through contact with the people while bringing a message of support to South Africans. Despite the government’s efforts to sanitize and control the experiences of the American athletes, they still managed to see under the curtain of apartheid and observe life in the Highveld and on the east coast of South Africa. At the same time they found camaraderie with their South African rugby brothers and in the process were changed by the people, the events, and the games they played.
