Planet-scape: a worldbuilding workshop
Next offering: August 19 to September 13
This four-week course is ideal for writers of science fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction who want to add depth to a world or setting, or create a new world from scratch.
**SOLD OUT – Stay tuned for our next offering**
The curriculum for this course is styled after an MFA workshop, but is open to new and veteran writers. Participants will build their world in stages over four weeks, with ongoing support from the instructor as well as other workshop members. Short story and craft discussions will inform the process, and there will also be a weekly writing prompt to help you situate scenes and characters in the world you are building.
- Week one: The intersection of setting, plot & character
- Week two: On the ground: landscapes & cityscapes
- Week three: Wisdom, intellect & belief
- Week four: Infrastructures of power
By the end of this course, you will have a solid foundation for your world or setting from which to launch an immersive, captivating novel.
To get the most out of this workshop, we require a commitment from each participant. Everyone enrolled is expected to engage in discussions; your workshop group will rely on you for comments, suggestions, and encouragement. Workload requirements:
- Submit one piece of work each week (~1000 words per week)
- Read weekly submissions and give feedback to 3-6 group members
- Read a weekly resource article and short story
- Apply insights from resources and story discussions to your workshops
- Participate in ongoing discussion
To achieve all of this, aim to set aside 15 hours per week.
